Opera for kids

March 1-4
Power Center for the PERFORMING Arts

Do you remember your first opera experience? Was it love at first note? Magical? Mystifying? Overwhelming? I remember that moment vividly as I sat cross-legged in my elementary school gym watching a local opera company perform scenes of The Marriage of Figaro. I was mesmerized; I immediately knew I wanted to do whatever that was. I took my excitement home, and my mom and I discovered a VHS copy of Zeffirelli’s production of La Traviata starring Placido Domingo and Teresa Stratas at the library. While watching it in my living room, I was overwhelmed: the voices, the orchestra, the exotic settings and extravagant costumes. I didn’t really understand what was going on, but I could feel what they were singing. I felt alive. These moments changed the course of my life.

In March 2018, from the 1st to the 4th, AOT will present four full performances of Puccini’s TOSCA, along with an abridged performance for young people. For the first time, AOT has secured the Power Center during the academic year, which gives us the opportunity to introduce young people to the power of opera. We have several hundred children already registered to come, but there are many classrooms in our community that cannot afford to join us—which is where you come in.

With your help, we can invest in the audience of tomorrow by showing them the wonder of opera today. For every $5 you donate, you are giving a child access to the unique and magical experience of live opera.

And, thanks to a very generous donor who wants to encourage community opera support, we have beengiven a $5,000 matching-gift challenge grant. This means that if you donate by December 31st, your gift will be matched dollar for dollar. No matter the size of your contribution, you will be doubling your impact if you give before December 31st, AND since Arbor Opera Theater is a 501c3 non-profit, your gift is tax deductible.

Thank you for your support!
