Introduction
One of the greatest pleasures in our world is art. Opera encompasses almost every artistic expression imaginable: performing arts such as music, acting, and dancing as well as visual arts and technology. Many may look upon this daunting combination with fear and label it elitist, but Arbor Opera Theater continues to find that as it brings opera to new audiences, people are surprised, engaged and deeply moved. That's because through art we are able to find expression beyond our everyday routine. We at Arbor Opera Theater are grateful to be a part of something so unique and inspiring, but we are even more appreciative of the support of patrons and loyal audience members. Arbor Opera Theater is flourishing today not only because of the dedication of its volunteer staff, but because of the continued and growing support of the greater Ann Arbor community.
I am pleased that for the first time, Arbor Opera Theater will present two main-stage productions for its 2008 season. We are offering two masterpieces by the genius himself: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Through some of the most beautiful and inspired music ever penned, Mozart was able to create deep characters whose humanity speaks to each of us. While he can definitely be flashy (as Emperor Joseph II said "Too many notes, my dear Mozart"), it is the subtle way he defines each character that amuses, frightens and often touches us. First we are collaborating with the Marygrove College Music Department to present 3 performance of The Magic Flute on May 16-17 at 8pm and May 18 at 3pm. This production is made possible in part due to the generous contributions of the Kresge Foundation, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs. The production will be a unique take on this classic story of good triumphing over evil that is sure to bring back memories for those familiar with Detroit. See the schedule page for more information.
On June 12-15 we will present a new production of what many consider to be Mozart's seminal work, Don Giovanni. Here is an opportunity to hear some of the finest young singers in the Great Lakes region accompanied by full orchestra and joined by the Ann Arbor Cantata Singers. As Arbor Opera Theater has continued to grow, so has its notoriety and this production will not only feature extremely talented local singers but also some artists from around the country (and globe!). For the first time, Arbor Opera Theater opened its auditions nationwide and we received an amazing number of applicants looking to join us for our 2008 season. After careful review, we invited over 70 singers to audition for us, and while they were all talented, we were pleased to know that our local singers were still among the most promising and professional. We know that this is a sure sign that Ann Arbor is the kind of community that can foster and support a local professional opera company such as Arbor Opera Theater.
We hope that you will take the time to come and experience what is sure to be a rewarding season of opera. On our sponsorship page you will find unique ways in which you can enhance your opera experience while supporting Arbor Opera Theater. We know that economic times are difficult at the moment, but we are confident that our organization can offer you unforgettable evenings whether you are able to afford to attend one performance or all of our special events. Please look at our schedule and sponsorship pages, which give you all the details you need to enjoy one of life's greatest pleasures!
