The Magic Flute School Show

Something new is buzzing at Marygrove College this spring: a collaboration between the Music Department and Arbor Opera Theater on an updated version of Mozart’s timeless opera, The Magic Flute. Using both College faculty and students, as well as professional singers from Southeast Michigan, the opera will be sung in English and set in the old J.L. Hudson Building in downtown Detroit during the early 1960’s. This “modernized” version is sure to bring back many memories for Detroiters as they watch various mannequins come to life and relate the age-old story of good triumphing over evil.

In addition to our full-length performances (May 16-18), we are equally pleased to have arranged a one-hour, shortened version of this opera for students to attend during the daytime. Using a carefully crafted narrative to advance the plot, the singers will present a cross-section of staged arias and ensembles with piano accompaniment and costumes.

This special abridged version of The Magic Flute for students will be presented on Thursday, May 15, 2008, at 10:30 a.m. in the Marygrove College Theatre on the campus of Marygrove College in Detroit. Ticket cost: $5.00

Realizing that funding is always an issue for schools, there are some limited monies available for transportation and/or tickets. Additionally, curriculum packets will be provided for all teachers bringing students to this production to enhance the learning process and musical experience.

For reservations, or to ask any questions, contact Dr. Joanne Clark at Marygrove College. Email jclark@marygrove.edu or call 313.927.1255

We hope you will avail yourself and your students of this unique “opera-tunity” to explore music, theater and Mozart in a fun and engaging format.
